San Leandro Cop Shot, killed
July 26 (ABC7) — San Leandro police say the suspect wanted in the shooting death of 42-year-old police officer Dan Niemi was arrested in Daly City Tuesday afternoon. Police say 22-year-old Irving Ramirez, of Newark, shot Niemi to death Monday night in the 14000 block of Doolittle near Belvedere Avenue.
Niemi, a patrol officer, had worked with the San Leandro police department for three years. Fellow officers said he planned to spend the remainder of his career as a police officer. "He was a hard working, caring young police officer that was satisfied with a career change and was developing very well," said Lt. Marc DeCoulode, a police spokesman. "It's hard when you lose what you consider to be a family member," DeCoulode said.
Niemi was shot about 10:50 p.m. Monday after answering a complaint about people loitering and making noise. Niemi was talking to a group of young men when a car drove up and one of the occupants opened fire, according to police. "There is no real motive that we know of," DeCoulode said. Niemi was taken to Eden Medical Center, where he died from his wounds. The San Leandro police department has close to 100 officers and serves 80,000 residents. The last time a city officer was killed in the line of duty was in 1968, DeCoulode said.
